Here we have an
Antique STANLEY No. 49 (RARE) Tongue & Groove (T&G) Swing Fence Plane, 'S' Mark
.  Stanley made the No, 48 and No. 49 T&G planes.  Hundreds of No, 48's were sold.  There was less demand for the No. 49 as it has smaller cutters (3/16" wide) and was designed for use on smaller thickness wood (1/2" to 3/4").  Consequently you RARELY see these offered at auction.  This example is in very good condition with nice nickel coverage.  This is an early vintage, probably a Type 2 (Type1 was japanned) since is has the early scroll designed handle and the "S" foundry mark on the body and the fence. (The "S" foundry mark was found on planes manuf. 1893-1899.)  The Rosewood knob is
Beautiful
and in Excellent condition with no cracks or breaks.  The spring-loaded locking pin for the swinging fence works as it should.  Fence swings smoothly.  It has the original set of cutters and knurled edge thumbscrews to lock them in place. No cracks, breaks or repairs.  No owner marks.
