RARE AMPEX 400A VACUUM TUBE REEL TO REEL DECK PREAMP TESTED

Model 400A Mono Reel to Reel Deck
You are bidding on a rarely seen Ampex Model 400A mono reel to reel tape deck. This consists of the tape transport and matching vacuum tube preamp in the portable traveling case. The chassis is dated 1952 (inside the unit).
The switches have been cleaned and lubed. The tube sockets have also been cleaned with contact cleaner. All tubes test good on our calibrated Eico 667 tester. All motors are working. It does play a tape with good sound quality but with a very slight background hum. All internal parts are original (check the pics) so recapping is very much in order for this unit. Fast forward and rewind have been checked and are working. The tape heads look to be in good shape. At some point an output volume knob was added to the front panel which is attached via a cable assembly to the internal output pot on the preamp. It actually works quite well. The VU meter is working properly but the meter glass is loose and will need to be glued back into place. We made a test recording and the quality was good with a light background hum. Again, a recapping would be a great choice for the preamp section.
This deck is sold as-is for parts or project use only. It's heavy (about 85 pounds) but we have lots of experience shipping big and heavy vintage electronics and will get it to you safely.
