    Description

    I'm starting to work through a quantity of mostly 1/4 in new tape heads, from Ampex, Nortronics and Michigan Magnetics. I'm checking them carefully and identifying them on manufacturer's specs so that you can be confident about what you are buying. If you need more data, please ask. I'll provide anything I can short of mounting the head on a deck and running it.
    This listing is for a used Nortronics PRB2H12L / 9202  2 Track Stereo 1/4in Play / Reproduce Head. I measured
    3400/3550 Ohms impedance, 560/579 mH inductance and 580 Ohms DC resistance. Inductance is about 80% of the published value, and the wear patch is less than 1/8in wide. You may get this lined up and put it into service without a relap, however with or without a relap, this has a lot of useful life.
    I do need to be clear that there is no marking on this head - it does wear off to some degree or other over time. It's identified by the type - it's visually a Nortronics PR 2 track head, and the DC resistance, which unlike impedance and inductance does not change with wear. Spec for the 12L is 570 Ohms and that is significantly higher than any other similar Nortronics reproduce head - this measuring at 580 Ohms is within the production spec for this model and no other that I can identify.
    This is from the Professional series with extended low frequency response down to 20 Hz.
    The Nortronics head part numbers need some explanation. The company used 4 digit model numbers and long OEM part numbers for the same heads. Their documentation shows the correspondence between the two identifications. If you are curious, they are available on the JRF Magnetics web site.
    Per the Nortronics cross-reference this is the correct replacement for much of the Ampex 3xx  series, various Scully decks and the Revox 36 series amongst others.

    COLORADO SALES TAX CHANGE 1st December 2018.
